The Butterfly Man: How Jose Built a Home Business After Making a Bet
Inspiration can come from the funniest places sometimes.
You might see something while walking down the street and get struck with an idea.
You may find yourself lost in thought while lazing the day away, only for inspiration to strike.
You may even be able to build a million-dollar business on a bet.
That last one sounds a little far-fetched, doesn’t it?
But it happened to Jose Muñiz.
Just like you, Jose lived a regular life working a 9-5 job. That was until an idle conversation with a friend led to an interesting challenge.
Jose’s friend bet him $100 that he couldn’t make a living selling butterflies.
It seemed like such a sure thing. How could somebody make enough money to survive by selling butterflies? It seems like an impossible task.
But inspiration struck Jose in that moment. The former business consultant didn’t see the joke in the bet.
He saw an opportunity.
Jose quit his job and opened Amazing Butterflies. Together with his wife, they began raising butterflies for use at events.
They’d anticipated that the effect of releasing dozens of butterflies into the skies would create a spectacle.
They didn't need to sell butterflies individually. They could sell them in the hundreds.
Soon, they had everybody from event planners to engaged couples wanting to buy their butterflies. They even became a supplier to Nickelodeon.
By 2006, the couple had managed to build a million-dollar business.
All of that came from a bet.
